“To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the most pleasant sensations in the world. You are surrounded by adventure.”
- Dame Freya Madeline Stark // Explorer & Author, 1933
Freya was imagined in San Francisco by two friends who bonded over a shared love for hats and adventure, but bemoaned their incompatibility. Frustrated by the lack of luggage solutions for protecting hats and tired of ruining them in overhead compartments, they created the first Freya product, a beautiful carryall for travel.
Our straw hats are made by hand, by artisans and family-owned businesses where traditional craftsmanship is apprenticed from one generation to the next. The straw hats are handmade in Ecuador by artisans. The palms are harvested and prepared for weaving in the villages through a traditional, manual process. The weavers are women - mothers, daughters and grandmothers - who have learned their craft from generations before them, and their technique has survived for over 3,000 years. Weaving is their primary source of income, and they do it alongside domestic responsibilities, as well as tending to their land.
They are woven by hand for approximately two days. These artists take pride in evolving new techniques of manipulating the straw and creating patterns with color. We capture and honor their genius through our diverse selection of hats which are all certified to exceed UPF 50.
Freya hat boxes and handbags marry old world artistry with modern functionality. (The hat box is designed to hold a laptop, accessories and up to 4 hats). They are handmade in Tuscany with Italian leathers and custom, brass hardware.
